Crocheted Babys' Hexie Hats Free Pattern

I've seen many baby's hats called roundie hats because their made in round rounds. These hats start with a hexagon so I'm going to call them Hexie Hats. I made a little girl's version and a little boy's version. I'm sure you can figure out which is which. I'm not sure which charity they are going to but I'm sure something will turn up soon. It always seems to when I make something with no specific destination in mind.

Hexie Hats

You will need:

Small amount sports weight baby yarn

I hook

Gauge: The first two rounds should be close to 3" across

Starting V stitch = ch4, dc in same stitch

V stitch= dc, ch1, dc in same stitch

Triple decrease= Do dc but leave last two loops on hook, in next stitch do dc leaving last loop on hook (now 3 loops), dc leaving last loop in next st leaving last loop (now 4 loops) on hook, yo and pull through all 4 loops on hook

V stitch decrease= In last stitch before ch 1 of previous row V stitch, do dc leaving last 2 loops on hook, in first stitch after the ch 1, do dc leaving last loop on hook (now 3 loops), yo and pull through all 3 loops

Directions are for newborn size, size 3-6 months is in (parenthesis)

Rd 1: Ch 4 and form loop, ch3 (counts as first dc here and throughout pattern), 11 dc in loop and join, (12 dc)

Rd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each dc and join

Rd 3: Starting V-stitch, *3 dc, V stitch, repeat from * around and join to 3rd ch of starting V-stitch

Rd 4: sl st into space of first V-stitch and do a starting V-stitch, dc in each dc and V-stitch in each V-stitch around and join to 3rd ch of starting V-stitch

(Rd 4A: larger size only, repeat Rd 4)

Rds 5 - 9: sl st into space of first V-stitch and do a starting V-stitch, *2(3) dc, triple decrease, 2(3) dc, V-stitch, repeat from * around, ending with 2(3) dc and join to 3rd ch of starting V-stitch

Rd 10: ch 3 only this one does not count as first stitch, do V-stitch decrease, dc in next 5(7) stitches around and join

Rd11: Ch 2, hdc around

Ok Rosa, ch = chain stitch, dc = double crochet, hdc = half double crochet, the V-stitch and decreases are explained in the beginning

Mitten pattern.
After I posted the pattern, I noticed a mistake. The number of dc in the chain 4 loop should be 16 all together, which would be the chain 3 plus the 15 dc. So sorry for the mistake.

I was online looking for one handed crafts. My mom had a stroke sometime back and is very down about not being able to crochet any more. I do not know how to crochet, I was trying to rig something up to help her but have failed. Do you have any ideas? I love your work.

Has your mom tried to loom knit? I was able to do it one handed two summers ago when I broke my wrist.

I love these baby hats and I am trying to make one myself but seem to be failing miserably :( It is only my second crochet project so could anyone offer any advice? Mine doesn't seem to look much like a hat, more like a big, floppy, wrinkled circle. Will it "come together" in the end or should it already be looking more hat like? By what round should I be able to see the start of the hat?

Thank you so much for the help!!!

It should start making a hat shape starting with round 5. Give it till the 7th or 8th round to start looking like it.

I'm having trouble with Rd 4 and would really appreciate some help. I love these sweet hats and wanted to make one for a friend who is having a baby. How many dc and how many V stitches should we have in each section of Rd. 4? When you crochet into the V-stitch is it in the space or is there 2 v-stitches (one in each stitch)? I started Rd 5 and my dc and v-stitches are all over the place with the triple decrease so now I'm confused. Thanks in advance.

Am a granny going to try the Hexie hat. Please tell me if the stitches are American or English crochet abbreviations as I believe they are different and I have found a page of conversions. Thanks.

Deb Upcycles said...

They're American.

Hey Deb,
I've done a few projects now but I'm still a beginner.
I'm having trouble with Rd5. I'm making the bigger size so I did Rd4 twice and now I don't understand how to get 3dc, triple decrease, 3dc into the 6 spaces available since doing Rd4 again makes an extra dc.
Please help me figure out what I'm missing :)

Hi Deb,
Having trouble with round 5. I have enough treble left over to do a decrease, not the 2 I am mean't to have and then join.
What am I doing wrong? Oh love the design. *smiles* Great for my unborn grandaughter.

I'm confused about rows 6-9.
I don't understand how you can keep on decreasing each row as directed.
Any help would be great
