The Never Ending Blanket Square Free Crochet Pattern

This is the standard Granny square I usually work with when making my blankets. This particular square is one made for a never-ending-blanket. I like it because it's "mindless", I can do it with my eyes closed. I know that for sure because I've tried it. It's also versatile, you can make each blanket unique by changing the colors, where the color changes are and size of the square. I've made blankets with 144 small squares and I've made them with one really big square. Several people have asked for the pattern and I've referred them to a similar pattern that I've seen on the web. But it is similar not the same so I thought I would finally post my pattern here. This square is suitable for projects asking for squares with a minimum of "holes" or "no lacy patterns" and makes a very warm blanket. I need to name it, hmmm, maybe the Never-Ending-Blanket square??
.
Never-Ending-Blanket square
.
chain 4 and join to form loop
Rd 1 chain 3 (counts as first dc) 2 dc, ch 2, * 3 dc, ch 2* 3 times join to first ch 3
Rd 2 chain 3 (counts as first dc) *dc in each dc (3 st total), in ch 2 sp for corner, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc* 3 times
Rd 3 and all other rounds start with 3 ch counting as first dc, dc in each dc and 2 dc 2 ch 2 dc in each corner
To change color simply end first color at end of round, join the new color anywhere ( I like to do it in a different spot than where I ended to make working in te ends less noticable) following pattern.

I love the square. I am not one to make "blankets" often as they can be time consuming but this really grabs my attention. I was wondering what size hook you are using for the standard square
Thank you so much for sharing

This a wonderful square. I think it could be made with any size hook from G through K. I make blankets to send to Romania and this would make a great blanket.

I really like this square.
I started a blanket with it using baby yarn, a light purple.

Awesome crochet square. I am adding it to my page about things you can make out of squares and rectangles.

I absolutely love this pattern. I've made 3 blankets using it! I love how it works up and the one I gave to DD gets rave comments all the time- and I have "orders" from various family members to make them one. thanks for a great pattern

Thank you so much for this pattern! I saw something like this in a catalog (where you could purchase the pattern) and I knew I could make one without buying a pattern. I tried it and now that I see your pattern, I see where I went wrong! I'll be making a little 12x12in lovey for my daughter and I'm sure several more!!

Hi! I am making one of these but have noticed that it's kind of "ruffling" a little. Do you think I may have done something wrong or is it possible it will be fine after blocking it? Thanks in advance!

Courtney, Some people seem to have this problem and others don't, I think it's got something to do with several factors, how tightly you crochet, and the size of the hook and yarn. I find I get some ruffling if I use a hook a little too large for the yarn. One solution is to leave out one of the dc in the corners every other round or as needed.

I love this square, and I've tried making it numerous times, but it never looks quite right. I've made it all in the same color, and so when I join and chain more, it makes it look like a line (of the three chains) going through the little diagonal holes in the corners. And it's always out of shape and looks very curved and weird.

I've tried crocheting in the top of the previous chain three (so the third one, I guess), but it still does it. I don't know how to make them all seamless like the example, and I was hoping that you or someone else would be able to help.

Thank you so much!

I'm making 16" squares. Since we crochet really to the left of the DC, the fabric wants to spiral. I avoid it by turning the work after each round. This evens it out. I also alternate doing 1DC, ch2, 1DC then 2DC, ch2, 2DC each round in the corners.

Instead of doing ch3 to start a round, I'm doing the no turning chain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LxYpo-tyi8

For the one who has the line of ch3s, perhaps you could slip stitch over to another area to begin the next round.

Have fun!

I've tried to follow the pattern to the letter, and by interpreting; and I can't seem to get it right. I would be so greatful to have a little bit more narrative in the accronym pattern; then I bet I'd be sucessful at making this great pattern work. [ex: round 1 ends on Ch3, round 2 begins with Ch3. error? And "Join to first Ch3"; is that join to first chain in round and then Ch3; or join to Ch3 of the origonal loop?

I like this, I'm using an H hook with RHSS and making two-color squares (two rnds one color, one rnd cc) and sewing them together to make a scarf for Operation Christmas Child. A dozen make a nice scarf with a sc edging after putting the squares together.

I'm gonna make my squares and put them togethr for the special olympics scarves I have 3 other scarves made already, and I just bought more yarn in their colors for this year...Red Heart Cherry Red and Navy. These squares are something that I can take with me when we go for Dr.s appointments and just riding in the car! I always take something with me to crochet. This si small and easy to od/! What does she mean by rd in her instructions. Thanks. Linda

It means round. This square is done in rounds rather than rows.

I had the ruffling problem too, so I did a chain one instead of a chain two between the pairs of dc's at the corners. This evened out the sides and also reduced the size of the corner holes, which most of the groups that want charity knitting appreciate.
