Amy's Newborn Cardigan Free Crochet Pattern

My friend Amy needed a newborns cardigan pattern and I had just finished one and told her I'd post the pattern. It started out as the sweater in my Newborn Sweater Set then I added a button band, sleeves and a collar.

I used an H hook and sport weight yarn and get 4 dc = 1 inch.

This sweater is newborn size.

V stitch: dc, ch1, dc in same stitch

Ch 52, you are starting from the neckline

Row 1: dc in forth chain from hook,(Ch 3 counts as 1st stitch here and in every row), dc in next 5 chains, V st in next ch, 9 dc, V st, 14 dc, V st, 9 dc, V st, 7 dc
Row 2-6: ch 3, dc in each dc and V stitch in each V stitch.
Row 7:(forms the armholes) ch 3 and turn, dc to first V stitch, folding so 1st and 2nd V stitches are together dc in both to join them, dc to next V stitch and join 3rd and 4th V stitch in same manner, dc to end
Rows 8-16: ch 3 and turn, dc in each dc

Button Band:
Row 1: without breaking yarn, ch 1, *going up the front of the sweater, 2 sc into the side of each dc and ch 3. [Do not just go around the dc or ch 3, but put the hook into the stitch]
Turn the work and sc back down the front or if this is the side you want the button holes, sc, sk 1 st and ch 1, 4 sc down front for 3 or 4 button holes and then sc the rest.*
3sc in corner at bottom, sc in each dc across bottom 3sc in corner and repeat from * to *

Sleeves:
Going through both V stitches where the sleeves were joined in the underarm, join yarn, if you don't do this there will be a hole in the underarm
Rd 1: ch 3, dc in each stitch, Check to make sure you have 22 stitches and join
Rd 2-10: ch 3, dc in each dc and join
Rd 11: sc around and end

Collar:
Row 1: At the neckline, join in side of single crochet for button band and ch 3, dc in side of second sc of button band, dc in each stitch of the starting chain across ending with a dc in each sc of button band.
Row 2-3: dc in each dc

Sew on buttons to correspond to the button holes

  4. hello...I'm pregnant and I am having a little girl I made the newborn set it came out funny haha the front was really skinny it doesn't span out..I don't know maybe it's the yarn I used...I usd the really soft yarn ...and what does it mean chain 3 counts as first stitch if I DC in fourth chain does that mean I have to chain 3??? Liz

  5. The V-stitch adds a stitch to each section as you go which is how it "expands". Make sure you are actually adding the stitches. Also, in the first row, the 3 chains are already made, on the other rows the I'm talking about the ch 3 at the beginning of the work where you turn.

  7. Okay when you DC in firt corner on row 8 is that the firdt double crochet in the vstitch?

  8. I don't quite understand.. All your doing in row 8 is double crocheting across, there shouldn't be any corners or V-stitch.

  9. Fabulous little sweater, just what I was looking for. You didn't say; but I assume, this is regular knitted worsted weight yarn?

  12. Hi there,

I love this cardigan. I only started crochet about a month ago so I'm new to all this but I've started on the cardigan and so far it looks lovely. I'm a bit confused about the button band though. Unfortunately I cut the yarn before I read that you weren't supposed to but I presume I can just tie in the yarn. Where's the best place to do this? Also do you mean I should put 2 sc in every dc and 2 in each chain? i found it quite tricky getting the needle into the spaces!

Sorry that's probably 2 really stupid questions!

Thanks for the pattern though. Even if I don't manage the button band it still looks great, although very small.

  14. I'm a little confused about the button band. Start at the bottom, go up, then back down, then around bottom, then up, then down - where do you end this? Thanks!

  15. It ends at the bottom of the sweater.

  17. when you say to V stitch in each V stitch does that mean when you have 2 V stitches in row 2 then row 3 will have 4? And so on. Every row V stitch will be double on the next row.

    ReplyDelete
  18. No, there is just one V stitch in each V stitch, you will never have more thatn 2 V stitches in a row.

  20. Your simply going to DC into both V sttches to join them.

  21. I've never tried to do a sweater before, and I'm confused about where to start and end the collar in the button band. Do you DC all the way down the side of the button band, and also, where does the chain 3 go?

Everything else is coming out just adorable! I love the ease of this pattern!

  22. I am confused on the button band. You start at the bottom and sc2 then chain 3 and sc2 so it makes like holes all up the front is that for the buttons?

  28. I love this pattern. despite not having being crocheting for long. This is simple and easy to follow and I am able to make it without thinking to myself "now what does that mean".

I am sure the people that receive them will love them as much as i have enjoyed making them :)

  29. I love this pattern. I have been able to crochet for a while now and I made this sweater for my now 7 month old son and everyone at the hospital raved about it. Definately looks a lot harder than it is to make.

  32. Greetings! I just finished this pattern, and it is perfect! I used Red Heart yarn (since we are on a budget... and Red Heart stuff holds up REALLY well in the washer) It may not be as soft as if using baby yarn, but will work over a onesie without being too itchy :) SUPER CUTE! Will be making another for my little one. Thanks so much for sharing!! LOVE IT!

  35. On row 2 you say ch 3 dc in each dc. But when you ch 3 do you turn after ch 3 or do you go around on the bottom side of your work. Irene

  37. i tried this pattern but not getting it. What is dc an sc in your pattern??..i am taking it as double crochet= insert a hook in a stitch, yoh(yarn over hook), draw loop through yoh, draw through remaining two loops...is it right??..thanks

  38. Yes you can link to any of my patterns.

  39. Sandy, I used worsted weight yarn and an 'I' hook (my 'H' hook has gone missing and all I has had on hand was WW) and it turned out to be on the bigger side of 0-3 mos size and very warm. With an 'H' hook and WW yarn, it would be a nice super warm sweater for a newborn in a cold region (Caron 1 pound yarn would be a good WW yarn for babies since it's much softer than Red Heart).

Anonymous, WW yarn also works up well with a 'J' hook and you could likely use them to make a 3-6 mos size without any changes to the pattern itself. Or you could double up baby yarn with a 'J' hook, which would be a little bulky but much softer than WW yarn.
